Literary Arts Committee
The WIAC Literary Arts Committee fosters support for literary events on Whidbey Island, including bi-monthly Poetry Slams with Jim Freeman. The slams were originally held solely in Langley, but have expanded to include evenings at the newly renovated Coupeville Library. Langley slams are held at the South Whidbey Commons Coffeehouse Bookstore. The WIAC Poetry Slams are organized by local novelist and poet Molly Cook.

Other current WIAC Literary Arts activities include Writers on the Rock, evenings held throughout the year for island writers. Hosted by South Whidbey Record Island Life editor and arts and entertainment reporter Patricia Duff, WIAC Writers on the Rock events invite various prose and script writers to read their work for an audience, provide a bit of fun entertainment and get some feedback, while informing folks about the Whidbey Island Arts Council's mission to support artists of all genres.

The Literary Arts Committee is also supportive of Brave New Words, an ongoing poetry festival organized by poet Victory Lee Schouten, sponsored in part by the WIAC. The festival holds various poetry workshops and readings throughout the year.

The committee is also dedicated to raising funds for literary scholarships as part of WIAC's broader scholarship program.
